Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme: Lotus I, II, III

General information on our Lotus I, II and III projects:

The three Lotus projects fall under the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme of the European Commission, and are coordinated by Ghent University in Belgium. It was just in July 2012 that the European Commission granted us the Lotus III project.

As you might already know, Ghent University is coordinating two projects on the Asia Regional since July 2010, called Lotus I and Lotus II. These two projects include the following 6 Asian countries in its consortium: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Please find some basic information about the three projects here below:

Lotus I:

  • Budget: € 2,463,375
  • Only mobility from South-East Asia and China to Europe
  • 150 scholarships planned in the proposals – 151 granted in reality (through 4 Calls for applications, of which the last one was a Focused Call on post doctorates)
  • Eligibility period project: 15 July 2010 – 14 July 2014

Lotus II: a continuation of the Lotus I project

  • Budget: € 1,999,950
  • Only mobility from South-East Asia and China to Europe
  • 117 scholarships planned in the proposal – 110 actually granted (through 2 Calls for applications)
  • Eligibility period project: 15 July 2011 – 14 July 2015

Lotus III: a continuation of the Lotus I and Lotus II projects

  • Budget: € 2 499 875
  • Only mobility from South-East Asia and China to Europe
  • 154 scholarships to be granted in the framework of this project
  • Eligibility period project: 15 July 2012 – 14 July 2016

There are three important differences between the Lotus III project and Lotus I & Lotus II:

  1. Lotus I and Lotus II were coordinated by Ghent University ↔ Lotus III will be coordinated by Ghent University in Joint Coordination with Sichuan University.
  2. Lotus I and Lotus II only allowed 1 month staff mobility for candidates of Target Group 1 ↔ Lotus III allows 1 month staff mobility for Target Group 1 and Target Group 2.
  3. In the framework of Lotus III and keeping in mind that we replaced the West Yangon Technological University by the University of Medicine 1, Yangon, we added one additional prioritized field of studies (cf. discipline in red below):

The project enables mobility on all levels: Bachelor, Master, PhD, Postdoc and academic/administrative staff.

It is open to all disciplines, with certain prioritized fields*:

    01: Agricultural Sciences

04: Business Studies and Management Sciences

    06: Engineering, Technology

    07: Geography, Geology,

    10: Law

    12: Medical Sciences

    13: Natural Sciences

    14: Social Sciences

* Students from other fields of study can also apply for a scholarship. In case of equally ranked applications,  priority will be given to the student majoring in a prioritized field of study.

More information about this new upcoming project is published on the Lotus website: www.lotus.ugent.be
